My $1,200 Mistake: Why Your Mars-Hydro TS1000 Won't Cover a 3x3ft (And What I Learned About Real Coverage)

To cover a 3x3ft with the TS1000, you'd have to hang it so high that the center intensity drops below optimum—or accept low light on the edges. Neither is good.

The Real Cost of Getting This Wrong

I calculated my loss: $290 for the light itself, plus $380 for seeds, nutrients, electricity, and my time over 3 months. The harvest was maybe 8 ounces of mediocre bud. If I had properly lit the tent, I could have easily gotten 14-16 ounces. That's about $1,200 in lost potential value (at local market rates, circa 2023).

  • Use the 80% rule. You want at least 80% of your canopy to receive above your target PPFD. For flowering (600-800 PPFD), that means the edges must be at least 480 PPFD. If they're not, either raise the light (but then the center drops) or buy a bigger light.
  • Consider multiple smaller lights vs one large one. For a 3x3ft, two TS600s (total cost ~$150) might actually give better uniformity than a single TS1000, because you can position them to overlap. I now run two TS600s in my 3x3ft—edges are around 550 PPFD, center is 750. Perfect.
  • If you're not sure, start with a single panel and measure before committing. Borrow a PAR meter or rent one from a local grow shop. It's cheap insurance.

I recommend the TS1000 for a 2x2ft flowering tent or a 2.5x2.5ft if you don't mind a slight drop at the corners. For a 3x3ft? I'd honestly say look at the FC series (FC-3000, FC-E4800). But that's my context—I grow photoperiods that need high PPFD throughout flower. If you're doing autoflowers or a small veg tent, the TS1000 might be fine.

That's a common scenario for growers who convert a spare bedroom. I made errors there too—wrong wiring, buying the wrong downlight type (non-dimmable when I needed dimmable).
