Why Replacing a Grow Light Costs More Than the Fixture

The Initial Mistake: Just Swap It

I'm the office administrator for a 35-person commercial greenhouse company. I manage all lighting and control-system orders—roughly $80,000 annually across six vendors—and I report to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I thought I understood fixtures. I didn't.

So when our grow room needed new lights, I treated it like a swap: match the wattage, compare the price, order in bulk.

  5. Verify the vendor can invoice properly. This matters more than the light. Finance will reject a bad invoice, and the cost lands on your department's budget.

I'm not saying every grow room has to be complex. I'm saying the complexity is real, and pretending it isn't is what costs money.

If I could redo that first purchase, I would have bought one TS 1000, read every page of the iConnect manual, connected it to our smart Zigbee hub, and only then scaled up. The light itself wasn't the risk. The system was.
