When to Switch to 12/12 Light Cycle: A Mars Hydro Checklist

One question I hear from commercial growers more than any other is when to switch to 12/12 light cycle. Not how. The 'how' is easy: set the timer. The real challenge is everything around that timer. This checklist is how I work through a flip when a grower is already behind schedule, has a full canopy, and can't afford a two-week delay. There are six steps, and the one most people skip is step four.

I'm a grow lighting consultant for an indoor horticulture supplier. In the last six years, I've helped with 70+ crop cycle flips, including same-day corrections for growers who hit the ceiling and emergency Friday-night calls. This is the order I use.

It assumes you're using a Mars Hydro LED fixture—a Mars Hydro TSL 2000 LED grow light, a TS-series unit, a bar light, or a smart chandelier with a controller. The steps are the same. The settings are not.

Step 1: Check your canopy height against the fixture's coverage footprint

Most people start by changing the timer. I start by measuring.

Before you decide to flip, measure the distance from the canopy to the fixture and the footprint you're covering. According to Mars Hydro's official product pages (mars-hydro.com, accessed January 30, 2025), each fixture has a recommended hang height and a published PPFD map. The Mars Hydro TS600 PPFD map, for example, is built around a 2x2 ft coverage area at about 18 inches above the canopy. The TSL 2000 is different: it's a dual-bar LED grow light, so its coverage is wider and the center-to-edge drop is less dramatic than a single point-source light.

If you're using a light pendant, mark the hang height before you change anything. A quick dot of tape on the cord lets you know the exact PPFD you were running in veg. Later, when you raise or lower the fixture in flower, you'll know what you changed.

Why this matters before the 12/12 switch: if your canopy is already 24 inches from the light, flipping will only make the stretch worse. You need to know if you have room to raise the fixture after the first 10 days of flower.

Step 2: Base the flip decision on plant height, not the calendar

The common advice is 'veg for 4 to 6 weeks.' That works in a room with unlimited height. In real commercial spaces, I've found that height is the limiting factor. Everything I'd read as a new grower said to count the weeks. After 70+ crops, I've changed my mind. The plant's current height is a more reliable trigger than the date you transplanted.

Here's a simple rule: flip when the tallest branch is about 50% of the distance between the floor and your fixture's lowest safe height. If your ceiling is 8 feet and the fixture hangs at 6 feet, you have about 72 inches of usable space. If the tallest branch is 36 inches, that's the average time to flip. Stretch in the first 3 weeks can add 40 to 80% to height, and you need room for that.

I had this exact call in March 2024. A grower with a 7-foot ceiling had plants at 30 inches. He wanted to wait one more week because his grow diary said 'week 5.' If he waited, the canopy would hit his light pendant during the stretch. We flipped the next morning. Normally I'd want to transplant, feed, and clean up the lower growth first. There was no time. We made the call from plant height, set the timer, and it worked. The lesson, in hindsight: the calendar is a guide, not a rule.

Step 3: Set the 12-hour dark period once, and don't touch it

When to switch to 12/12 light cycle is a decision. The actual switch is just a schedule change. But the way you make that schedule change matters.

If you're using Mars Hydro's Iconnect controller, or a smart chandelier fixture with Zigbee, program the on/off times in the app and let the controller do the rest. Pick a lights-off time that makes sense for room temperature. I prefer to start the dark period in the evening so the room can cool down naturally.

If you're using a basic mechanical timer with a light pendant, set both pins, check the current time on the dial, and plug the light into the timer. Then unplug the timer and power it back on to confirm the schedule is actually running. I've seen a grower flip the plants to 12/12, then accidentally leave the timer in the 'manual on' position for three days. The plants reverted to vegetative growth and the whole crop got shifted by two weeks.

The non-negotiable rule: the dark period must be 12 consecutive hours. No opening the tent to check buds. No paused schedules from the app. Once you choose your flip hour, keep it the same every day.

Step 4: Re-check PPFD after the photoperiod change

This is the step that most people skip. They change the timer, expect flowering, and never look at the light intensity again.

Here's the problem: when you shorten the photoperiod from 18/6 to 12/12, the daily light integral (DLI) automatically drops unless you raise PPFD. If your plants were happy at 600 µmol/m²/s for 18 hours, that's a DLI around 39 mol/m²/day. Under 12 hours at the same PPFD, DLI drops to about 26. Some cultivars respond fine. Some slow down. That's why you need to re-check.

But don't crank the dial just because the math says so. Check your fixture's actual PPFD at the canopy with a quantum sensor. The Mars Hydro TS600 PPFD values on the product page are a starting point, but they are measured in a controlled room with no wall reflections. A concrete room with reflective sheeting will be different from an open warehouse.

With the Mars Hydro TSL 2000 LED grow light, the two-bar form means the PPFD is more even across a 2x4 ft tray than a single point-source light. That makes it easier to raise the fixture without creating a hot center. If you're using a smart chandelier fixture, use the app's dimming function to ease into the new intensity over the first three days—don't jump from 60% to 100% on the same day you switch the timer.

Step 5: Check for light leaks before the first dark period

People assume 'dark' means dark. The reality is that a bedroom-shifting amount of light is enough to delay flowering. This is one of those industry misconceptions I keep re-learning. A small LED on an AC unit, a status light on a power strip, or light through a zipper gap can all count.

I once had a grower call because his plants were stuck in early pre-flower for ten days. We checked timers, controllers, nutrient schedule, everything. Then I stood in the room during the dark period for about a minute, and I saw a faint blue glow on the back of the canopy. It was the standby LED on an air conditioner. We taped over it. The plants finished flowering normally a few days later.

So add this to your checklist: after you set the lights off, stand in the room for 60 seconds and let your eyes adjust. Look at the canopy from all four sides. If you see a glow, find the source. If you can't remove it, cover it with black electrical tape. This is especially important for commercial rooms with equipment LEDs that you don't think about during veg.

Step 6: Mark Day 1 of flower and set your environment targets

The first day of 12/12 is Day 1 of bloom. Not the day you see buds. If you write 'flipped on Jan 30' and then later wonder when to harvest, you'll have a clean number.

Set two environmental targets for the first week of flower: temperature around 24-27°C and relative humidity around 55-65%. After the stretch, lower RH to 45-55% to keep dense buds from becoming a humidity problem. If you're using Mars Hydro's Iconnect system, some controllers can track room conditions and alert you to spikes. But a paper log works fine.

Also, don't change your nutrient formula on the same day. Give the plants a few days to adjust to the new photoperiod before shifting from vegetative nutrients to bloom-specific nutrients. The 12/12 switch is already a stress event. Stacking too many changes on the same day makes it harder to tell what caused a problem.

Final notes

The common mistakes I see in flip week are almost never about the timer itself. They're about skipped measurements and light leaks. The when to switch to 12/12 light cycle question is really about knowing your canopy height, your fixture's PPFD map, and how much vertical room you have left.

If you're using a Mars Hydro fixture, the answer is not 'week 5.' It's the moment when the canopy has reached the right height, the photoperiod is set on a controller you trust, and you've checked the actual PPFD at the canopy. Then you let the dark period do its job.
