Mars Hydro 150W Grow Light: Smart Controller or Simple Timer for Commercial Growers

Start with Three Questions, Not One Product

Every few weeks, another grower asks me: "Should I buy a Mars Hydro LED grow light and control it with a smart controller, or just use a timer?" My short answer is: it depends.

I manage procurement for a 45-person commercial greenhouse. Over the past six years, I've tracked about $380,000 in lighting and control equipment. Actually, let me rephrase that: the cheapest setup is the one that matches your workload, not the one with the lowest sticker price.

Before you compare controllers and timers, answer three questions:

  • How many fixtures do you actually need to control?
  • Do the rooms need different schedules?
  • Is outdoor lighting part of the project?

The first two decide whether a controller earns its cost. The third decides whether you should be comparing controllers or switches at all.

Scenario 1: A Single Mars Hydro 150W Grow Light

If you're setting up a single Mars Hydro 150W grow light, start with the cheapest reliable timer. According to Mars Hydro product listings, the TS1000 draws 150W. Run that for 18 hours a day, and you're using about 2.7 kWh daily. At roughly 12.6 cents per kWh, which is close to the U.S. commercial average in the EIA's Electric Power Monthly as of 2024, that works out to about $10–13 per month. A mechanical timer costs $10–20.

I've seen controller bundles add $80–120 on top of a fixture, based on current Mars Hydro listings; verify current pricing. For one fixture, that's almost always optional. One thing that surprised me: the controller didn't reduce the electric bill by itself. It only helps if you use it to create better schedules or catch failures. For a 150W light turning off and on at the same times every day, the energy math is the same with a $15 timer and a $100 controller.

Let me be blunt: when I put a single Mars Hydro LED grow light on a basic timer and another on a controller, side by side, I didn't see a yield difference in 90 days. The plants grew the same. The controller was easier to adjust from my phone. That's its main benefit.

And if the question is "smart light switch vs bulb" for a grow light, neither is the right mental model. An LED grow light isn't a bulb you swap in a socket. You'd either plug it into a smart plug, wire it to a smart switch, or use a timer. For one light, the timer is the no-brainer.

Scenario 2: Multiple Mars Hydro Fixtures, Multiple Rooms

This is where Zigbee controllers start to make sense. In 2023, I audited our time logs and found we were spending about two hours a day resetting mechanical timers after outages and seasonal changes. At $22 per hour, that's roughly $1,300 a month in labor that produced no extra yield. A controller that groups lights and runs zones from one app removed most of that work.

Everything I'd read about smart controllers said they were either a waste or a silver bullet. In practice, it depends on the weakest link in your operation. If your weak link is labor, a controller is infrastructure. If your weak link is a tight budget, a timer is better.

With a Zigbee-compatible system like the Mars Hydro Iconnect controller, you can put the veg room and bloom room on different schedules. You can also set alerts when a light goes off schedule. Compatibility matters, though. I still kick myself for assuming all our fixtures would sync in 2023; some needed a separate module, adding about $55 per light. I'm not 100% sure every Iconnect bundle includes the Zigbee module, so check the listing before you order.

The payback math is pretty simple. If a controller adds $200 to your order and saves 30 minutes of labor per day, it pays back in about eighteen business days. If it prevents one missed 12-hour photoperiod, it pays for itself in avoided crop stress. I wouldn't recommend it for a single light, but for five or more fixtures, or for any grower who travels, it becomes a different decision.

Scenario 3: Outdoor Lighting and Smart Light Switch vs Bulb

Now for the question I keep hearing in procurement discussions: smart light switch vs bulb. For an indoor lamp, a smart bulb is usually the easiest upgrade. Screw it in, pair it, done. But in a commercial grow facility, outdoor lighting is a different project. Parking lots, entrances, perimeter security lights, and loading docks aren't good places for consumer smart bulbs. You want a switch that lives in a weatherproof box and controls a fixture built for rain, cold, and humidity.

A smart switch is also easier to service. A bad smart bulb at 15 feet means getting the ladder out; a bad switch means changing a single device at eye level. Zigbee controllers can be great inside a grow room, but metal buildings and long distances can kill wireless signals. If a Zigbee outdoor bulb drops offline at 2 a.m., you haven't saved anything. For outdoor lighting, I prefer a wired smart switch with a local manual override. If you're renting and can't rewire, a smart bulb can work, but check the IP rating and put it somewhere you can reach with a ladder.

One more thing: if you're building from scratch, budget a separate circuit for outdoor lighting. It isn't the kind of thing you think about when ordering grow lights, but it's the kind of thing you think about at 2 a.m. when a breaker trips.

This isn't a Mars Hydro issue. Even if every grow tent is running on a Mars Hydro LED grow light and Iconnect controller, the outdoor lighting should be on its own system. Your total cost of ownership includes both, and mixing consumer bulbs into outdoor fixtures is how you end up replacing things mid-season.

How to Tell Which Scenario You Are In

Here's the honest guide I use when I'm on the fence:

  • 1–2 fixtures and one schedule? Buy the timer, not the controller.
  • 5+ fixtures or 2+ rooms? Price out Zigbee controllers and compare that to your labor cost.
  • Outdoor lighting involved? Plan for switches, not bulbs, and use a separate circuit if the budget allows.
  • Already using a Zigbee hub? Then a Zigbee-compatible Mars Hydro controller can be a no-brainer even for three lights.
  • Too busy to use an app? A timer solves more problems than a controller.

I don't think every grower needs a controller. I also think some growers waste money by pretending they do. To me, the right question isn't "smart light switch vs bulb" or even "smart controller vs timer." It's: how much time are you willing to spend, and what do you lose when a light runs off schedule?

And if you're running older HPS fixtures, don't feel pressured to abandon them until the numbers make sense. Backup heat is a real thing in winter. Just run the TCO, verify current pricing, and make the decision for your own facility.

Don't hold me to the exact payback months, either. Electricity rates and labor costs change. But the method doesn't change: track the time, count the failures, and then decide.
