Can Any Light Be a Grow Light? A $2,300 Mistake Taught Me Otherwise

The cheap-light decision

In late September 2024, our propagation space ran out. We grow basil and salad greens for local restaurant customers, and when basil doesn't get planted in the right week, every order downstream slips. So I added a rack and started the trays. The rack needed a grow light.

The obvious choice was a Mars Hydro LED light from the TS series — specifically the Mars Hydro TS1000 grow light, the same model we already run on the other racks. It was in stock, but freight to our city took about a week, and expedited shipping cost extra. Then I remembered the box of fixtures from our office renovation: four downlight LED pucks and two spotlight light fixtures. They were white LEDs. They were free. They were available that afternoon.

My reasoning went like this: plants use white light. These emit white light. So a so-called grow light is just a more expensive version of the same thing, right?

That reasoning ended up costing us about $2,300 and one restaurant customer. I am not proud of the number. But I documented the whole thing so the rest of our team doesn't have to repeat it.

'Lighting is lighting' — until it isn't

The seeds germinated fine. For the first few days, they barely needed light anyway. But around day eight, the difference became obvious. Basil under the Mars Hydro racks was short, dark green, and dense. Basil under the office fixtures was pale, with stems reaching upward like it was trying to find the sun.

I checked nutrients. I checked pH. I checked airflow. Everything looked normal. Eventually, a neighboring grower lent me a PAR meter, because 'it looks bright' is not a measurement.

A PAR meter measures photosynthetically active radiation — the wavelengths plants can actually use. Under the downlight LED pucks, my trays were getting between 60 and 110 µmol/m²/s. At the tray edges, the reading dropped below 30. Then I carried the meter to the rack where the Mars Hydro TS1000 grow light runs on its usual 18-hour timer. At the same height, it was delivering around 350 µmol/m²/s across the tray area, including the corners.

Fast-growing leafy greens generally want at least 300 to 400 µmol/m²/s for an 18-hour photoperiod. The Mars Hydro rack was doing that. My temporary setup was getting a fraction of that. The plants weren't sick. They were starving for photons, and low light makes basil do something worse than grow slowly: it stretches. It puts all its energy into reaching for the one bright spot in the room.

Everything I'd read about grow lights over the years had told me the same thing: check PPFD, don't trust your eyes, and don't judge a fixture by how bright it looks in a warehouse. I didn't disbelieve that advice. I just decided it didn't apply to me. (It applied to me.)

The $38 that made things worse

I took the PAR reading on a Thursday. The logical fix was simple: order the Mars Hydro TS1000 grow light with expedited delivery, have it by Saturday, and give the basil two full weeks to recover before the customer's due date. That extra shipping would have cost around $40.

Instead, I went to a hardware store and bought two more spotlights on clearance for $38. I told my partner they would fill the dark corners and even out the light. They didn't. They made the bright spots brighter and the dark corners darker, and they cost us the four days that actually mattered.

By the following week, the basil was still too uneven to sell. I called the restaurant and asked for an extension. Their menu was already planned around our original date, and a smaller late delivery didn't help them. They cancelled the order.

Here is the damage: the lost order was $1,450. The spent seeds, trays, and growing media added another $340. Labor and the extra spotlights pushed the total past $2,300. The expedited shipping I chose not to pay would have cost around $40.

What finally fixed the rack

After the cancellation, I ordered the Mars Hydro TS1000 grow light I should have ordered three weeks earlier. With express shipping, it arrived in two days. I hung it at the height in the manual, plugged it in, and let it run on the same 18-hour schedule as the other racks.

I am not going to pretend the brand name is magic. But the spec sheet listed photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) — the total amount of usable light the fixture emits each second — instead of only watts and lumens. That is the number that separates a tool from a guess.

The next batch of basil on that rack came in on schedule. The stems were short, the leaves were broad, and the color matched the other racks. The only thing I changed was the light fixture.

So, can any light be a grow light?

Short answer: no — not in the way the question is usually asked. A regular downlight LED or spotlight light fixture can keep a plant alive for a while. It might even grow a low-light houseplant. A commercial crop on a fixed delivery date is not a low-light houseplant.

I am not saying every fixture with the words grow light on the box is good, and I am not saying a non-horticultural white-light fixture can never work. Some high-output fixtures that were never marketed for plants can produce a usable PPFD. The deciding factors are always the same: how many usable photons reach the canopy, how evenly they are spread, and whether you checked it before you staked a crop on it.

The cheapest light is the one that does the job the first time. The most expensive light is the one you install twice.

What I do now when a light can't wait

The bigger lesson wasn't about downlights or spotlights. It was about waiting. When a crop is already behind schedule, the cheapest option on paper is rarely the cheapest option in practice. If a rack goes dark, I order the replacement immediately and pay for the delivery time that gets it here before the crop needs it.

Two months after the basil mess, an LED driver failed in one of our fixtures on a Thursday afternoon. Ground shipping would have meant waiting until Monday. Overnight shipping cost $24 more. I paid it without a second thought. That rack lost three days of growth instead of five. That is the whole lesson: in an emergency, you are not paying for the light — you are paying for the certainty that the light will be there in time.

Some lessons are cheap. This one wasn't. If my story saves one tray of stretched basil, it was worth writing down.
